We’re not a testing lab, and we don’t pretend to be. Honest Aquarium is built by a real fishkeeper doing real research — reading manufacturer specs, cross-checking reputable aquarist sources, and following what actual tank owners report over months and years of use.
Our three-step method
1. Define the job
Every piece of gear has to do something specific — filter a certain tank volume, heat a certain number of gallons, hold a certain bioload. We start by working out what the gear actually needs to do before we look at any specific product.
2. Compare the specs
We pull real manufacturer numbers — flow rate in GPH, wattage per gallon, media capacity, tank footprint — and lay them side by side in plain language, not marketing copy.
3. Read the keepers
Manufacturer specs only tell you so much. We weigh long-term owner feedback — noise level after a year, reliability, whether a heater actually holds temperature — because that’s what tells you if something is genuinely good, not just good on paper.
What we don’t do
- We don’t buy and bench-test every product ourselves — we’re upfront about that, and we’d rather say so than fake a review.
- We don’t have an in-house expert reviewer or aquatic vet on staff. Fish-health content is checked against reputable aquarist and veterinary sources and clearly marked as general information, not professional advice.
- We don’t accept payment for placement or ranking. See our Affiliate Disclosure.
- We check every product we recommend against official recall and safety notices (e.g. the CPSC) before publishing, and again whenever we refresh a page.
